Food Decision Engineering

Turn food-safety evidence into decisions that reduce illness

Food Decision Intelligence for safer food systems

The International Food Risk Analysis Consortium (IFoRAC) applies Food Decision Engineering to help governments, international organizations and food-system actors transform risk assessment, data and expert knowledge into practical interventions, defensible priorities and measurable impact.

Discover how IFoRAC can support your next strategic food-system decision.

Better evidence does not automatically produce better decisions

WHO estimates that unsafe food caused 866 million illnesses, 1.52 million deaths and 57.1 million lost healthy life years in 2021.

These estimates show where the burden may be greatest. But decision-makers still need to determine:

  • Which foods and pathways should be targeted?
  • Which interventions are feasible?
  • What reduction in risk can reasonably be expected?
  • How should uncertainty affect priorities?
  • How can safety be improved without compromising food security, sustainability or trade?

IFoRAC helps close this gap.

From burden estimates to action

What IFoRAC offers

Food Decision Missions

A Food Decision Mission is a focused engagement that takes one important food-system decision from problem formulation to an implementable and measurable action portfolio.

Burden-to-Action

Translate food-borne disease estimates and national evidence into intervention and investment priorities.

Climate-Ready Food Safety

Anticipate how climate and supply-chain changes could alter hazards, surveillance needs and prevention strategies.

Safe Innovation Fast-Track

Define the decision-grade evidence needed to evaluate novel foods and production systems efficiently without lowering the safety bar.

Balanced Food-System Decisions

Compare options across food safety, nutrition, food security, affordability, sustainability, waste and trade.

Explore the four Decision Missions

How a mission works

From question to decision capability

  1. Frame
Define the decision, owner, deadline, objectives and constraints.
  2. Connect
Assemble risk assessments, burden estimates, surveillance, consumption, inspection, climate, trade and operational evidence.
  3. Simulate
Compare interventions and propagate uncertainty across alternative scenarios.
  4. Decide
Identify robust options and make trade-offs visible.
  5. Learn
Monitor implementation, define triggers and improve the next decision.

Each mission can leave the client with a reusable Food Decision Twin: an updateable representation of the evidence, pathways, intervention options, consequences and indicators supporting the decision.

How Food Decision Missions work

How we work with

Solutions designed around the client’s decisions

  • International organizations: convert global frameworks, estimates and foresight into implementable country and regional programmes.
  • Governments and competent authorities: prioritize hazards, investments, inspections, surveillance and regulatory actions.
  • Food sectors and companies: strengthen source prevention, supplier resilience and safe innovation.
  • Development partners: design measurable, scalable and country-owned food-safety investments.
  • Research and academic institutions: transform scientific methods into reusable decision capabilities.

Why IFoRAC

Scientific credibility with an implementation mindset

IFoRAC combines:

  • Quantitative microbiological and chemical risk assessment
  • Dietary exposure and risk-benefit analysis
  • Food safety governance and Codex experience
  • Decision science, economics and trade-off analysis
  • Artificial intelligence and reusable analytical tools
  • International capacity building and institutional design

Our work is transparent about uncertainty, proportionate to the available evidence and designed to remain useful when data are incomplete.

What food decision does your organization need to make?

Tell us the decision, who owns it, when it is needed and what evidence is currently available. IFoRAC can propose a focused first step.
